Vardzia Cave Monastery XII-XIII cc. AD - monument is situated on Mtkvary River's left bank in historical part of Javakheti. Built in 1156-1203, it has played a great role in political and cultural life. During the archaeological excavations of 1970-1971, in Vardzia 3 cultural layers were discovered. The fortress was built in the reign of King George III and was finally constructed during the years of Queen Tamar's ruling. She selected the best places in rocks considering features, convenient location, domestic, and military point of view.
