City-fortress Ujarma is a magnificent example of fortification architecture of the early Middle Ages. Located on right coast of the riv. Iori, it was an important strategic point supervising border between Kartli and Kakheti, on Gombory pass. The city was based in III c. by Asparug-Mitridat, the ruler of Kartli and again built up by King Vakhtang Gorgasali in V c., who at the same time moved his residence there. Once the fortress even was the second capital of Georgia (IV-VIII centuries). In subsequent centuries Ujarma also has, as though less, the strategic value. Unique two-storyed church is located inside the fortress.
